Board of Directors

Steve Zollos

Steve ZollosSteve Zollos is the Executive Director of Healthy Communities for Bon Secours Hampton Roads.

He is the current Chairman of the Board of Directors for Ramps Across America, Inc., and has served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Successful Aging Forum since 2005.

Steve was instrumental in the development of the Senior Exercise program, Bodies ’n Motion and the Gen-Tracker 5000 Database System. He also planned, implemented and operated the first Senior Assessment Program in Hampton Roads focusing on serving the senior population and their caregivers through an inter-disciplinary team of healthcare professionals.

Mr. Zollos has grown hospital membership programs from less than 3,000 qualified members to over 70,000 qualified members while maintaining an active membership base. He is the Senior Editor for Senior Health Magazine, and spearheaded the internationally recognized “Extreme Home makeover – Senior Style” community service project as well as the RAMP-IT-UP and Seniors Helping Seniors to Help Seniors projects.

Steve has built strategic alliances with a variety of organizations and used those alliances to serve and improve the health of the local community.

Mr. Zollos holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing and a Master of Business Administration Degree with a specialization in Information Systems from Bowling Green State University of Ohio. He is also a Certified Senior Advisor.


Renee K. Rountree, MHA, FACHE

Renee RoundtreeRenee K. Rountree, MHA, FACHE, was named Vice President of Trauma and Emergency Services in February 2007. Prior to that position, she served as VP/Administrator of Riverside Rehabilitation Institute (RRI) for three years. In this role, Ms. Rountree directed the day-to-day operations of the system’s acute rehab hospital. Has also held posts with Riverside Long Term Care, Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, and was an Administrative Resident for the health system.

Ms. Rountree received a bachelor’s degree in public health from Clemson University and a master’s degree in health administration from the joint Medical University of South Carolina and Clemson University program. Ms. Rountree is a member of the United Way Keel Club, and the Newport News District 1 Planning Task force. Ms. Rountree is also a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, a member of the Virginia Tobacco Settlement Fund Advisory Board for the Northeast Region, a Virginia Hospital Association member, RAMPS Board member, and was in 2006, named one of the Top 40 Under 40 Businesspeople in Hampton Roads. She is President of the Smithfield Virginia Rotary Club, District 7600. Ms. Rountree is active in her community, as a Suffolk 60 Care member, Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce Board member, and is a NSA School Development Advisory Committee appointee. Ms. Rountree is married to husband Glenn, with three children, under the age of seven.


Jeff Byrd Biography

  • Jeff ByrdBorn 1967 and life-long resident of Norfolk, VA.
  • Graduated Norfolk Christian High School 1986.
  • Attended Old Dominion University from 1986-88.
  • Began working in the medical equipment field for Rehab Health Care in 1997 as a Durable Medical Equipment technician. Worked as Senior Technician from 1998-2005.
  • Worked from 2005-present for Mobility Center of VA as a Mobility Consultant.

Shaun Smith, President, Designed for Life

  • Shaun Smith

    He joined the Navy in December of 1975 and served as a nuclear trained electrician in the submarine service.  He first moved to the Tidewater area in January of 1984 and Newport News has been his primary residence since that time.  Shaun retired in November of 1996 after 21 years of service.

  • Certified Aging In-Place Specialist (CAPS), and Instructor for the National Association of Home Builders and Remodelers.

  • Certified Senior Advisor helping families to live out their retirement years worry free.

  • As an independent consultant, Shaun is working with families and contractors throughout Hampton Roads and the southeast to create more accessible homes and buildings; From Assessment through 3D, Interactive Design, he helps families to create an environment that supports them for a lifetime.

  • Additionally, Shaun is a graduate from the Virginia Institute for Spiritual Direction and is a Certified Spiritual Advisor helping others to improve their “Oneness” with God.


Susan Crigler Castle

Social Worker, Peninsula Agency on Aging, Inc.

  • Five years experience with P.A.A. as a Senior Outreach to Services Coordinator/ Social Worker assisting seniors to live productively and independently in their homes. Facilitates senior services such as Meals-on-Wheels, Personal Care, Emergency Assistance, and Medical Transportation. Refers seniors to other community agencies to secure services to maintain proper nutrition, personal hygiene and home safety.

  • Fifteen years experience as a Rehabilitation Counselor/Vocational Case Manager in the private sector. Provided rehabilitation services for industrially injured workers to assist individuals in reaching their maximum level of productivity within the medical guidelines provided by their treating physicians. Certified as a vocational expert for legal proceedings. Certified as a Rehabilitation Counselor with the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Workers Compensation Programs. Formulated training programs and conducted ergonomic assessments of the workplace according to ADA requirements.

  • Previous experience as a Probation Counselor and Special Placement Resource Coordinator for the Newport News Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court Service Unit.

  • Graduate of the College of William and Mary with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology.

  • Hampton native and life-long Peninsula resident. Active in church and community organizations to include the Woman’s Club of Hampton.
